About Bill Dollins and GeoMusings

Who is that mug?

This my personal blog about GIS, software development and related issues. I originally started blogging a couple of years ago over on Blogger with a blog called “ArcDeveloper” but I wasn’t satisified with it so I killed it. I picked up again in late 2006 and started this blog on Blogger. I grew dissatisfied with Blogger and moved over to WordPress in December of 2006. My hope is to update this blog as frequently as time permits. At times, I’ll post about programming with a GIS focus but will also comment on larger issues, depending upon how my day has gone. In addition to being a place to vent, GeoMusings will also serve as an outlet for my own experimentation. I hope that you’ll find it interesting and useful.

On the professional side, I’m a Senior Vice President with Zekiah Technologies in La Plata, Maryland. Zekiah is a small technical consulting firm focusing on software development, database implementation and system integration. This blog does not represent their views at all. I am available for consulting through Zekiah. Inquiries toward that end can be directed to me via e-mail (see below)

I am also a developer on the zigGIS project. ZigGIS is an extension to ArcGIS that enables direct connection to PostGIS. I work with Abe Gillespie and Paolo Corti on that project.

I’ve been doing GIS software development since the early ’90s. I spend most of my work day with ESRI technologies and have been working with them since ARC/INFO 6.something. The evolution of the ArcGIS platform, especially the last few releases focsuing on ArcGIS server, have been exciting. I am a big believer, however, that exposure to a broad range of technologies makes me a better consultant. Toward that end, I do a lot with open-source GIS technologies as well. I work mostly in .Net these days (C#, VB.NET) but also have experience with Java, VB6, C/C++, most RDBMS technologies, etc. In general, I’m pretty jazzed about geospatial technology in all its forms. I’m old enough to have moved past the “religious wars” phase of my career so I don’t generally subscribe to any particular ideology with regard to technology. Hopefully, I’ll be fairly even-handed in dishing out praise and criticism.
